The Sharing Economy - Review of the NS Tourism Accommodations Regulatory Framework

In 2016, in partnership with Tourism Nova Scotia, TIANS oversaw research to review the current status of the regulatory environment of the accommodation sector as well as the growing unregulated tourism product. Many key stakeholders were involved in consultations and the recommendations from industry identified the need for smart regulation to protect the tourism economy. TIANS continues to support the need for a level playing field for all businesses and modernization of industry regulations as they relate to this issue.

Provincial Levy Working Group

Over the past number of years, various regions of NS have implemented or have been in discussions to implement a room levy as a way to generate marketing revenue. During 2015 and 2016, TIANS led an industry working group to discuss the best approach for Nova Scotia and whether a broad industry position on this issue could be developed. These discussions formed the current position which follows below, "Marketing Levies - TIANS Position 2016-2017."

Since TIANS revised their position on Levies in 2013, there have been additional levies implemented and more being contemplated. TIANS believes a coordinated approach on this issue would ensure the dollars raised are leveraged in the most beneficial way to build new tourism receipts into the Province. Read More

 

Signage

TIANS continues to actively correspond with the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, seeking action on the issues related to signage in the province of Nova Scotia. The most successful tourism destinations understand that the destination infrastructure includes signage and must be done in a strategic and deliberate way for the benefit of residents and visitors alike. Read More

 

Provincial Visitor Information Centres

TIANS took an active role in support of Nova Scotia’s provincial Visitor Information Centres and suggested that the proposed abrupt closure of the centres in 2016 was contrary to a robust growth agenda. TIANS is advocating for a more comprehensive approach regarding visitor services in the province. With the announcement in February 2016 that the centres will remain open, TIANS continues to push for a more strategic approach to improve visitor servicing throughout the Province. 

 

Provincial Resorts

TIANS believes the Provincial Resorts are an important part of the rural infrastructure for the province. TIANS has expressed concern regarding positioning by Tourism Nova Scotia of the resorts as having little value. TIANS believes that with the right operating model and private sector partner, Digby Pines and Liscombe Lodge could once again be iconic draws for visitors. The current requirement for possible sale does not require a new owner to operate the resorts – this is extremely concerning to operators all over the Province, in particular, the immediate regions impacted. TIANS continues to communicate with TNS and Minister Furey to champion the seeking information around the current economic impact of the resorts.

Emerging Leaders Council

TIANS has developed the Emerging Leaders Council (ELC) to strengthen the tourism industry’s voice and build industry engagement. The ELC provides Industry leaders with an opportunity to develop their skills and engage the tourism industry thus enhancing the capacity and diversity of TIANS leadership. Read more

 

Tourism Identified as a Solution for Nova Scotia's Economy

The Nova Scotia Commission on Building Our New Economy released their final report “Now or Never” that has recommended a renewed focus on tourism with a doubling of revenue over the next decade. Read More

 

Red Tape Reduction – Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations

TIANS is working in partnership with Service Nova Scotia & Municipal Relations (SNSMR) to advance a provincial government initiative focused on streamlining the processes required to start and operate restaurant and accommodations businesses in NS. Tourism's Role in Rural Nova Scotia

TIANS Board met with members of the Nova Scotia Commission on Building Our New Economy in New Glasgow, to talk about tourism’s role in rural Nova Scotia. In preparation for the meeting, TIANS commissioned Dr. Nancy Chesworth of Mount Saint Vincent University to develop a position paper on Rural Tourism. To view the position Paper click here.
