Tourism Industry Celebrates Peggy's Point Lighthouse Restoration

Halifax, NS (September 11, 2012) - The Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia (TIANS) will host an event today in Peggy’s Cove at 1:00pm, celebrating the completion of the painting of the Peggy’s Point Lighthouse by the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades.  Work on the lighthouse was completed last weekend through a partnership between TIANS, the Union, the St. Margaret’s Bay Tourism Association, the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Provincial Department of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism.

The celebration will include acknowledgement of the Union from TIANS, The Peggy’s Cove Preservation Society as well as other community and government partners.

“Today’s event is about recognizing the significant effort the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades have put into restoring this Nova Scotian icon,” says Darlene Grant Fiander, President of TIANS.

“This project can serve as a model for how communities throughout Nova Scotia can work in partnership to preserve other lighthouses.  The tourism industry in Nova Scotia is very appreciative of the time and energy put into this project, and we want to acknowledge this great community service,” says Grant Fiander.

The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, District Council 39 (Atlantic Provinces) donated product and labour for the project and also removed unsightly graffiti from nearby rocks. The initiative generated significant interest with many fans of the area observing the work through a webcam offering images of the painting progress which used traditional rope scaffolding.

Working with partner associations and stakeholders, TIANS is committed to representing the best interests of the Industry; enhancing and supporting the development of a competitive business environment; advocating on issues critical to the Industry's success; and most importantly, leading Nova Scotia's most promising economic sector.
